Financial Christmas Gifts

Christmas is here and if you haven’t been shopping yet, well it might just about be gift voucher time!

However, before you concede, consider giving ‘the gift of knowledge (as goofy as that sounds) and buy someone a book.

Here are some ideas for books, yes these books do revolve around money, but no, they won’t put you to sleep!

Griftopia: Bubble Machines, Vampire Squids, and the Long Con that is Breaking America, by Matt Taibbi. Rolling Stone journalist, Matt Taibbi has been at the forefront of understandable reporting on the economic crisis. His humorous (and often profane) efforts connected the dots between the insane risk taking on Wall Street and the average American.

Griftopia tells some hair-raising stories. Some of the worst involve American cities and municipalities being looted by deals to lease off their infrastructure assets to overseas entities at rock bottom rates.

How an Economy Grows and Why It Crashes, by Peter and Andrew Schiff. Peter Schiff was one of the lone voices predicting the financial crisis; here, with his brother, he writes a humorous and easy to understand book about economics.

The book starts with a simple story of three men on an island and how their economy grows and falters through their actions, often drawing a parallel to historical events. In the process it embarrasses economists who often use sophisticated methods to come to stupid conclusions.

The Millionaire Next Door, The Surprising Secrets of America’s Wealthy, by Thomas Stanley and William Danko. Who do you think is more likely to be a millionaire? That’s the initial premise of this book.

Often the person appearing to be a millionaire is far from wealthy, or as the Texans would say, ‘Big hat, no cattle.’ The Millionaire Next Door paints a picture of an unassuming millionaire, documenting the careful strategies they use to accumulate wealth.

Merry Christmas!
